Photo Journalism Opening Work

What is Photojournalism?

Photojournalism is a type of photography that is used in conjunction with a form of news media. This includes newspapers, magazines, television news, and internet reporting.

Why is Photojournalism so Important?

Photojournalism has become a part of the news. It is so excepted as a means of information that a story without a photo seems incomplete. Photojournalism allows us to communicate much more efficiently and effectively compared to the use of spoken or read information. The job of a photojournalist is to capture an image that connects the viewer with the event.

How is it Different from other forms of Photography?

Photojournalism differs from other forms of photography because it tries to remain unbiased. The photograph has to be accurate to the reality of the event while incorporating the context surrounding the event.

How has Photojournalism changed in my Lifetime?

I think that the use of cellphones as cameras has most effected photojournalism. This is because of the simple fact that more people have access to a camera. Before only photographers would walk around with a camera but the immense accessibility of cameras have added to the amount of photos taken. Memorable photos of events can be taken by someone who just posted a picture on social media.

3 Major Events

Trump Elected President

This event was one that I will remember because it has been the most controversial election that I have been alive for. More importantly it was the first election that I payed attention to and I was old enough to be aware of.

Hurricane Katrina

I remember this event because even though I was too young to be aware of its occurrence I witnessed the aftermath. Since I lived in Arkansas when it happened I was closer and therefore heard about it more. I also went down on a mission trip to help fix a church effected by the storm.

Introduction of the iPhone

I don't remember this event with particular clarity but I can clearly remember seeing an add for new phones on the TV near Christmas when I was a kid. The ad was for a new line of phones that had the full slide out keyboard. Soon after the iPhone came out and I'm still shocked by how quickly it changed our basic concept of a phone.

Photo Journal - Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a compositional guide used by photographers as well as filmmakers. It is a grid that is split into thirds horizontally and vertically. The photographer can use the grid as a way to line up their shots to emphasis key features. In the picture that I took (above) I lined the sky up with the top most section, and the ground with the lower most section. I also lined the truck on the left with the two left points of emphasis. The points of emphasis are the four corners of the middle third. The viewers eyes are naturally drawn to rest at these points which aids the photographer in creating pleasing composition. I like to use the rule of thirds as a guide for all of the shots that I take.
